Asbestos Insulation Board (AIB)
Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) produced as a low density board (700kg/cubic metre). Containing between 25 and 40% asbestos - usually Brown asbestos, mixed with either Portland cement or calcium silicate.
This material has been widely used both to provide structural fire protection and heat resistance, and as a general building board.
A similar material has been used to produce ceiling tiles.
AIB having a high fibre content and being softer than asbestos cement is more likely to release fibres.
Asbestos Cement
Asbestos cement generally contains between 10 and 15% White asbestos fibre in a Portland cement. It is not unknown however, for older types of asbestos cement materials to contain Brown or perhaps Blue asbestos.
The material can be found compressed into flat or corrugated root sheet, or moulded into a wide range of products (e.g. guttering or flue pipes).
Fibres may be released during repair and maintenance work, or if the material is damaged due to deterioration from age or weathering
