Asbestos

Sprayed Asbestos

A composite material comprising cement and up to 85% asbestos fibre applied by spray technique (also known as Limpet). Blue and Brown asbestos have been extensively used in this application. It is a friable material that will release fibres to the atmosphere - especially during any repair or maintenance work.

As the material ages, more fibres can be released that may result in contamination to adjacent areas. Typically, sprayed asbestos is to be found on ceiling, walls and structural steelwork.

Pipe & Boiler Laggings

All types of asbestos have been used in lagging. The material content may be up to nearly 100% asbestos. Some bulking agents have been added, and often the material is sealed in place within a plaster coating. The material is very friable if the outer protective layer is damaged, and may give rise to a significant fibre release if disturbed.

Many boiler houses that were stripped of asbestos in the 1980's may still have residue asbestos beneath the fibreglass replacement lagging.
